If you want to find some fairly standard answers about Coaching and what it can do for you, you can simply go to my Coaching Frequently Asked Questions page right here: FAQ.
You can even do a more in-depth read about coaching on Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coaching
On this page though, I want to take a more informal look at coaching, what it can do for you, and why you might want me as your coach.
First, please understand that there are several kinds of coaching. Let me just list a few of them for you:
Basically, just about anything you want to do, someone can coach you through it.
Well isn’t it simply because they want to get better?
That’s the obvious answer isn’t it? To get better, do better, achieve more.
However coaching sometimes isn’t so obvious.
In fact, I have found that the people that need coaching the most are the people who usually don’t get it – even if they want to get better.
For many people, if they are doing well in business or life, they don’t really think about coaching.
Most of them don’t see any value in coaching or as I said it’s not very “obvious” to them. They really don’t know what they don’t know.
We simply call this ignorance and as the saying goes, “Ignorance is bliss.”
So they go about their day, doing their thing, missing out on what they can really, truly achieve if only they worked with the right person.
I mean, have you ever heard of someone saying, “Money doesn’t buy you happiness?”
Usually, the person saying that is broke!
Of course, they are right though, money doesn’t buy you happiness. I can tell you from experience that it makes it much easier to be happy if you have money though!
As someone famous once said, “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, and rich is better.”
Money can buy you toys that make you happy.
Money can pay for expensive healthcare that makes life easier.
Money can pay for fun and exciting experiences that keep you alive and refreshed.
And it can open doors for you to live life to the fullest.
Of course it can also make you a bigger jerk if you’re one already.
And really, it all means nothing if you don’t know what you’re passionate about or don’t have anyone to share it with.
And I digress….
“If money was not a challenge (or you had all the money you could ever want or need), what would you do?”
CHANGE ==> Line Deleted
What would you do if you could do, buy, have anything you ever wanted?
How would you spend your time?
How would you keep yourself busy, entertained, excited?
Think about it…
Most people never ask themselves this question
Once you’re done asking and answering that question, then ask yourself the next question, “What’s preventing you from doing that right now?”
And finally, follow that with, “If you can’t do what you really, truly, want, then how do you get there and what are you doing to get there?”
If you answered, “I don’t know; I don’t know; I don’t know,” then maybe coaching is for you.
Give it some thought.
“Are you happy in your blissful ignorance or do you want more?”
“Are you willing to do what it takes to get more?”
Why do top athletes, performers, celebrities all have coaches?
Aren’t they already doing well?
Don’t they already have enough money to do what they want to do?
How well would Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Tom Brady have all done without coaches?
Maybe pretty dang well. GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) level though?
Well, we’ll never know because they all had coaches.
Why do they work so hard to achieve so much?
Or is it because they worked so hard that achieved so much?
Things that make you go hmmm….
On the flip side, many people that are struggling think about getting coaches.
That’s a bit more obvious right?
Unfortunately, many of those people are in a mindset of scarcity and fear, so paying for a coach is not something they think they can afford even if they desperately need it.
Quite the conundrum huh?
Those that want it can’t get it and those that need it won’t get it.
So who gets coaching?!?!?
Should you?!?!?
Well, like anything else, that’s a personal question.
I’m just here to shed some light on the matter so that you can make your own personal decision on whether to proceed or not.
So let me start shedding…
First and foremost, let me just address the investment into coaching.
And yes, I do call it an investment because that’s exactly what you’re doing. You’re investing… in yourself.
And to be quite blunt, as with all investments, past results are not a guarantee of future results and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.
From my experience though, the people that lose are the people that DON’T:
Can you believe it?
Some people actually pay for coaches and don’t listen to them or don’t do what they’re told.
Unbelievable right?
Well it should be and you probably know that it’s not really that unbelievable.
Unfortunately, it’s much more common than not that someone doesn’t listen to a coach that they hire.
Kinda like the latest diet fad that’s out there.
Ever hear of someone joining a diet program and not following the diet?
Happens all the time.
And coaching is no different.
Why is that?
Sometimes it’s because they don’t mesh or resonate with the coach (which I’ll talk about in a bit.)
And for the most part, [FILL-IN-THE-EXCUSE] and I’ve heard it.
And that’s the bottom line right?
You see, all excuses are equal.
They all take away from your primary objective.
I don’t care if it’s a family emergency, your dog ate your homework, your car broke down, or whatever.
They all take away time, energy, and focus from you doing whatever it is that you need to do.
Now, those who are able to bypass all the excuses and actually listen to and do what a GOOD coach tells them to do, like many investments, given the time and energy, the results are exponential!
Notice that I said “exponential” and not linear.
This means that while some people see some immediate results, the most profound and long lasting results take a bit of time.
Time to cultivate, time to implement, time to absorb and produce results.
How much time?
Well, how long does a professional athlete have a coach?
Could be months, could be years, or even decades!
Hey, the truth is if you’re getting results that are helping you grow, develop, and succeed, then keep on working with a coach!
Don’t over-complicate it.
If it works, do it!
Back to the money thing though… when I was a teenager looking to go to college, there was no way I could afford it.
Funny thing though was that the thought of NOT going to college didn’t even occur to me even if I didn’t have the money.
Instead it was really, how the heck to do I pay for this thing or how do I afford it?
I mean, I knew without a doubt that I was going to go to college.
That’s what my older siblings did.
That’s what almost all my friends did.
That’s what I was told to do all my life… go to school, get good grades, get a good job.
Going to school and getting a good job meant going to college.
There just wasn’t any other choice.
And you know, when faced with no other choice, the mind does amazing things.
If figures out a way.
And just like the Apollo 13 Rescue Mission, I started to look at any and all options.
Well o.k. Maybe it wasn’t as life threatening, harrowing, or scientific as the Apollo 13 Rescue Mission and you could not have convinced my young 18 year old mind otherwise!
So first, I started to apply to every single scholarship I could find.
Then I applied for as much financial aid as I could.
And when that wasn’t enough, I looked for the highest paying part-time job I could find.
And when that still wasn’t enough, I asked everyone in my family if I could borrow some more money.
And when all was said and done, I went to college while living on canned soup and ramen noodles until I graduated with a ton of debt that took years to pay back.
I didn’t let the fact that I didn’t have any money stop me.
I just expected to figure it out…
And I did – with a lot of hard work and effort.
Of course, in today’s world, financing is much easier and quite frankly, much cheaper.
If you have good credit, it’s very easy to get a loan at relatively low rates for basically anything you want. Even up to $250,000 or more.
If you don’t have good credit, if you’re willing to put in some effort, you can get your credit repaired in 6 months to a year and then qualify for credit.
You can also use retirement accounts like an IRA or 401k.
You can use insurance policies.
You can use someone else’s credit.
You can quickly make money by selling things online.
The possibilities are endless.
The bottom line though is that like my thought process when attending college, money wasn’t the issue and it never is.
The issue is how bad do you want it and what are you willing to do in order to achieve it.
If you are willing to put in the time and effort, you can afford basically anything you want – and yes, I can help show you how.
So let’s move onto coaching itself.
As I mentioned in my About page, coaching isn’t for everyone.
You can read all about it on my About page if you haven’t already.
So how do you go about finding out if coaching is for you or not?
Well here’s the thing about a GOOD coach… they help you find answers for yourself.
Sure, sure, sure, sometimes they will tell you the answers that other people have used and can tell you exactly what others have done and we usually call that consulting.
See, consultants are hired to fix a particular problem.
Get a person or company from Step A to Z.
Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies often hire consultants to implement a particular software, system, or project.
Mentors on the other hand are people who have been there, done that, and are now imparting their wisdom to the next generation.
So what about a coach?
Don’t coaches also impart their wisdom and help fix particular problems?
Well of course.
The big difference though is that a coach’s focus is to help someone ask the right questions so they can come up with the answers that work for them.
Even if the coach already knows the answer, the person being coached needs to come up with the answer in order to fully understand and implement it.
Some of those answers might be tried and true methodologies, systems, tools, and more.
And yet, others might just be creating something entirely new.
Obviously there’s a lot of overlap between these terms and it’s really up to you to decide if coaching is right for you.
So let’s get back to the college thing.
Back in the day when I attended, you got to choose your major… or your area of emphasis.
I chose engineering because that’s what I was told to do by my parental units.
The biggest college or major at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign at the time though was the College of LAS.
LAS stood for Liberal Arts and Sciences.
As you can imagine, Liberal Arts and Sciences was quite “liberal” and covered a variety of topics and areas.
So much so that most people called it the College of “Lost And Searching”.
Of course, after a bit of searching, most people end up finding the right path for themselves.
Are you lost and searching?
Do you need help figuring out the next step in your evolution?
Or do you know exactly where you want to go, what you want to do and just need help getting there?
Either way, a coach might be something you should look into.
Well yes. Like attracts like and opposites do attract.
You see, it all boils down to this thing called resonance!
And one of the key elements of success with coaching is finding a coach that resonates with you.
So what does resonance mean?
Well according to one definition, “Resonance is a common vibration so it means two things move in unison so when something ‘resonates’ with you, you understand, feel in common with or can sense it without explanation or problems.”
So far, do I resonate with you?
Again, as I mentioned in my About page, go to my Blog and read some of the articles on my site, sign up for some of my free emails and/or trainings, buy some of my stuff or even come out and meet me at one of my events.
If you think we are a fit and “resonate”, let’s have a conversation to see where it goes.
I can tell you that my focus in coaching will be to first, listen to you, your story, and what you are looking to achieve.
Then I’ll ask you a bunch of questions to get to know you better, get to know your desires, passions, skillsets, and more.
Next, we’ll work TOGETHER to put a roadmap of success for you that is aggressive, achievable, and rewarding.
Of course, it’s up to you to work hard to achieve it and me to hold you accountable.
We’ll make adjustments along the way.
I’ll ask even more questions and make suggestions as we proceed.
I’ll smack you in the head if you want me to or give you a swift kick in the behind.
Or I’ll hold your hand and help you though something.
In the end, we’ll focus on the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen or continuous improvement with the ultimate goal of getting you where you want to go.
Pretty simple.
Can you do all this by yourself?
Sure.
Will you get the same results as working with me or some other coach?
No.
Probably not or maybe not.
Just plain and simply no.
Why?
Because I’m going to bring in concepts, thoughts, systems, processes, ideas, and strategies that you’ve never heard of or have forgotten about.
I’ll hold your feet to the fire.
I’ll push you.
I’ll challenge you.
I’ll support you.
All things that would be difficult for you to do by yourself.
Make sense?
And since I’m biased, let me just say that I do believe coaching is for everybody.
I believe that everyone can benefit from coaching.
I believe that there’s a coach for everyone.
The trick is finding the right coach for you and making sure that you’re ready for it.
As they say, you can lead a horse to water…
The horse still has to drink it on its own though.
If you want, get a hold of me and we’ll have a conversation and see if I’m the right coach for you.
Otherwise, get back to work and good luck!
